Thomas Cavanagh Construction Ltd. successfully completed the Robert Grant Avenue Extension Phase 2 project, delivering a major north–south arterial connection between Abbott Street and Hazeldean Road in Stittsville. This multi-year infrastructure project provided critical transportation capacity for the growing Fernbank community while integrating complex municipal servicing and utility works.
The completed scope included full road construction, deep servicing installations, multi-use transportation features, traffic signal infrastructure, and extensive stormwater system upgrades. Work was executed across several construction seasons to maintain traffic flow, coordinate approvals, and accommodate adjacent development.
Key elements completed by Cavanagh include:
• Installation of major storm sewer outlets—including the Cranesbill and Street 3/4 systems—featuring upsized sewers, new maintenance holes, double catch basins, and extensive temporary flow management.
• Full roadway construction including earthworks, granular placement, curb installation, asphalt paving, boulevard grading, and restoration throughout the entire corridor.
• Construction of continuous cycle tracks, sidewalks, monolithic concrete facilities, directional and detectable warning surfaces, and multi-use paths.
• Upgrades to the Hazeldean Road intersection and the Abbott Street roundabout, including new PXOs, traffic signals, roadway geometry modifications, and accessibility improvements.
• Installation and realignment of underground hydro duct banks, Bell infrastructure, and new street lighting systems, including poles, foundations, conduits, luminaires, and handholes.
• Watermain and sanitary sewer installations, including large-diameter trunk connections and new service provisions for future development lands.
Through coordinated scheduling, extensive utility relocations, and adherence to evolving design revisions issued after tender, Cavanagh delivered a critical piece of municipal infrastructure that now supports improved traffic capacity, safe multimodal travel, and continued growth in Ottawa’s west end.
