This project consisted of the widening of Strandherd Drive from an existing two-lane undivided arterial roadway to a four-lane divided arterial roadway over 3.8 km and included the construction of a new overhead structure (Structure value $8.5M) over the existing VIA Rail Crossing. Cavanagh contracted Looby Builders as a preferred Subcontractor for the structural components on this project.
The project works can be divided into the following work components:
- Construction of a four-lane divided urban arterial roadway including grading, drainage works, structure construction, and paving. To accommodate the construction of the new overhead structure over the existing VIA Rail Crossing, a temporary detour was constructed and removed after the structure was complete.
- Preloading and wick drain installation was required for the approaches to the structure due to poor soil conditions. Lightweight fill construction was also required to accommodate the grade raise.
- Reconstruction of the Kennedy-Burnett Stormwater Facility including reconstruction of the inlet structure, construction of concrete block retaining walls, installation of multiple headwalls, and installation of large diameter pipes.
- Installation of a new sanitary trunk sewer using concrete pressure pipe with sizes ranging from 450 mm to 825 mm diameter.
- Construction of over 3 km of storm sewer with sizes ranging from 450 mm to 1950 mm diameter.
- Trenchless install of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main under the existing VIA Rail corridor.
- Realignment of the Foster Drain to accommodate the widening of Strandherd Drive and the construction of the detour roadway. The Foster Drain is a known environmentally sensitive area. Therefore, environmental best practices including Species at Risk impact mitigation and monitoring were utilized, and licensed fish salvage activities completed within the permitted in-water timing window.
- Coordination and staging of works were critical for this project to ensure that the travelling public could safely navigate the site and access businesses/residents with minimal disruption.
